What To Expect During Your Newborn Photo Session

You’ve likely been staring at your little bundle of joy since they burst out of the womb and they’re still just as cute as a button. Now that you’re past the newborn stage, you might be thinking about getting to have some professional photos taken of your new family member.

The excitement of becoming a new parent is one of the most miraculous feelings ever. It’s a time when the whole world is perfect, and nothing else matters. Every moment should be cherished — including the newborn photo session that you’ve likely arranged weeks in advance.

Your newborn photo session can be a nerve-wracking experience for parents. When you’re stressed and the little one is tired, there’s bound to be some frustration. Worry not, I have a ton of newborn tips and tricks to help reduce these feelings of stress so I can capture beautiful images of your little one. Here’s what you need to know about newborn baby photoshoot.

How to prepare for a newborn photo shoot

The first thing to do is to make sure you have the right clothes for your baby. If you’re having a boy, it’s best to wear something soft and loose, like a t-shirt or a button-up shirt. For girls, I prefer dresses because they are more flattering and comfortable, but pants can also work! My stunning gowns work perfectly for family photos with your newborn.

Partners and siblings just need to wear lighter or neutral tones for family photos OR darker tones, since you will be given a choice between two backdrop options. No need to provide any clothing for the baby — for some setups the baby will be nude. I have hundreds of beautiful wraps, layers, bonnets, hats and headbands to choose from. Of course, I’m always open to newborn photo clothing ideas that you may have.

I can even get creative with hair clips or bows if your baby is bald. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure they are secure enough that they won’t fall off during the shoot!

Choosing the right location and time of day

An infant photo shoot can take place anywhere, but it must be somewhere quiet and relaxing. Every photographer would also want a space that is large enough for them to get creative with backgrounds and props. The idea is to put them in an environment that will make them feel relaxed and happy so they can show their true personality through their smile and facial expressions.

All newborn sessions take place at my Mullaloo studio and this already includes sibling and family photos. My studio will be nice and warm with plenty of beautiful props and colours for you to choose from. I also have a toy room for older siblings to play in while we take photos of your baby alone. You don’t need to worry about anything, except bringing plenty of food for the baby. Other than that, I’ve got you covered!

The time of day is something that you might not think about when booking a newborn baby photo shoot. And it’s true — you can take beautiful photos at any time of the day. But some times work better than others, so it’s important to consider the time of day when booking your appointment.

It’s best to schedule a newborn photo shoot during the day, as it will allow you more time before or after work if needed. Plus, babies sleep better in natural light.

Conclusion

Overall, when it comes to newborn photo sessions, it’s best to try and put your mind at ease. You’re about to embark on an important process, one that will last several hours for most people, but the results are well worth it in the end.

Your session will likely take between 2-4 hours depending on how quickly you and baby can become comfortable with the camera and how many setups we get to do. The most important thing is that you schedule the appointment when you know you and the baby are both ready!

Hopefully, if you’re expecting a new baby anytime soon, this article has given you a taste of what to expect during your visit with an expert newborn photographer. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
